There are voices which we hear in solitude, but they grow faint and inaudible as we enter the world.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

I need a day of quiet, solitude, sewing in my studio listening to the silence. Do you ever feel that way. So busy that you long for solitude? Yup that is me today. I've been on the run for a week and out of the house at every turn. ( Actually having way too much fun ) I had so much fun "lunching" with girlfriends laughing and catching up with old friends. But...this leads to NO SEWING....NO DESIGNING....YIKEESS. I'm not the kind of person that "does lunch", but last week I was and now....I miss the solitude of my sewing room. I think this is basically the dilemma of a person who at the heart of it all HOME BODY.

On Thursday I went to the north Georgia mountains on a search for a retreat site for my Silver Thimble Club. I took Suzanne and Cathy along and we had fun exploring. I found an idyllic place for a sewing retreat. I'm working on the details and costs with more research to come. I'm hoping to make an announcement about this next Silver Thimble venture by the start of the Stitch In next Monday... stay tuned!! We would love to have you join us on Quilt Retreat in February.

While "lunching" in the Mountains we went to a famous barbecue place in Ellijay. They have a hill in the back of the restaurant with crosses marking the passing of the pigs that have given it up for the sake of the honored pork plate. I can't decide if this is hilarious or creepy. The photo shows the hill (ok could be a better picture). Those little specks are crosses with each little piggy's name. Then when on the porch in the rafters are pig cut outs with more piggy names. I'm sure my name is going to end up on one of those little piggy's some day. OH MY!

The Stitch In begins one week from today and I have 3 weeks worth of work to do between now and then. We really "rock the house" during this week. I'll be posting with photos from the scene of the crime oops EVENT. During the last Stitch In over 80 quilts were completed. Talk about eye candy!

I just re-read my post. I'M NEVER EATING BBQ AGAIN......I DO THINK THE GRAVE MARKERS ARE CREEPY.

Check out this great give away! I'm going to win.

A little of what you fancy does you good.
-Marie Lloyd

I was at Little Quilts yesterday having a lovely visit with Mary Ellen and all the Little Quilts gang. I love her shop and I love her "people" they certainly have fun over there. (this is the other side of Atlanta for me). Mary Ellen is kitting up my "Scrappy Nines" quilt for our Silver Thimble Club so we needed to get some stuff planned together. While there we were talking about a couple of new notions she zeroed in on at market. One is the Rapid Fire Ruler (don't cha love the name} This ruler makes wonderful Hunters Star blocks with no Y SEAMS..are you payin attention people? I said...NO Y SEAMS...I did see a demo of the Rapid Fire ruler at market and I was impressed. The true story of my seeing the demo is that Mary Ellen ordered me to get down to that booth and check it out for my Silver Thimble people and I always do as I am told! Well I bought the thing yesterday. This is proof once again that I am on a quest to own every notion on the planet. I'm going to study this ruler with intensity...similar to the way I studied in college, minus the beer. I will report back later. This gives you time to prepare your piggy banks, okay?

Oh, and by the way there were two other rulers, one called the Tucker Trimer which all the girls at Little Quilts were jummpin up and down over, and another one called the Wing Clipper which gave a similar reaction from the L.Q. staff. (those girls are easily pleased) They were out of the Tucker Trimmer, apparently there is a run on these babies. I need to approach my reasearch with caution so I'm going to absorb one new ruler one at a time THANK YOU. I'll wait for the next shipment to arrive on the Tucker Trimmer and Wing Chopper thingys. Then I will drive slowly (zoom) over there and look at the rulers and decide if they are Silver Thimble research worthy...Haha and you think I'm easily swayed right?

In my last post I did the Simply Womans Daybook idea. I found the web site and here it is for your reading enjoyment. http://thesimplewomansdaybook.blogspot.com

Off to have lunch with a friend and then home to sew, and sew, and sew.

FOR TODAY … Monday, June 22, 2009

Outside my window…am..sun shinning, hot and humid, pm raining, hot and really humid now.

I am thinking… How much I love my husband and children and how I loved our past weekend. It is so much fun to have everyone here.

I am thankful for…My friends, family and life in general.

From the learning rooms… I am learning to appreciate the value of just enjoying every single minute of every day. It takes a while to slow down and ENJOY.

From the kitchen… I love to cook. Tonight it is leftovers because I cooked so much this weekend! I'm not a lover of leftovers but I'm not wasteful either.

I am wearing… Floppy cotton knit dress. Don't cha love clothes that don't touch your body. I wouldn't go out of the house in it. So lovely.

I am creating… A quilt block for a magazine submission that is making me nuts.

I am going… to drive with Suzanne to the North GA. mountains this week to look for retreat centers for my Silver Thimble Club...can't wait.

I am reading… Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Stout.

I am hoping…that I will be able to get this quilt block done tonight. Probably won't happen

I am hearing… Quilt boy walking in the door. OH BOY...

Around the house… Mopping acres of hardwood floors and wood steps...

One of my favorite things… Mexican food (not good for us..but so dang goood) . Good books...quilting DUH!!! I wish I loved exercise..but no.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Doctors appt tomorrow. Lunch with a friend on Wednesday, drive to the mountains on Thursday, lunch with a friend who is becoming a granda ma of twins on Friday...Sewing every minute in between and major weekend sewing to catch up. YIKEES

Here is a picture thought I am sharing.
I love those two girls!

A father is the hands that hold you safe.
-Author unknown

Just a quick blog to wish all the fathers a special day today. Quilt boy is being pampered by his family and we are enjoying a full weekend of yummy cooking and laughing family around the dinner table. I cooked out last night, my BIL, SIL and nephew came out for dinner. Earlier in the day the men played golf and we girls went shopping...well of course what else would we do!

It is still stinkin hot which makes keeping the grill fired up especially pleasurable. We are grilling hamburgers and corn, baked beans, along with sides of sliced tomatoes and marinated cucumbers...sweet tea and strawberry pie. Don't you wish you were here? Emily and Russ are leaving around 4 to get back to Asheville. The weekends go so fast I love having all my babies sleepin in their beds. Mary Beth will be gone for a few days back to school to visit her friends and will return on Wednesday.

Guess what I'm going to do when everyone leaves!!! Yup it is up to the sewing room to get something accomplished. I want to finish my king size Strawberry Pie quilt made from Chocolat fabbies. I only have to sew 3 more rows and I'm done so that is my first plan of attack. I almost finished it when I was in the mountains with Becky and Brenda. I also have some Silver Thimble special secret stuff going on up there...HMMMMMM.

I miss my daddy so much today. I can't tell you. He would love to be here grilling with us and laughing and telling stories. How did I get sooo lucky to have such fantastic men in my life? My daddy, my wonderful Quilt Boy...and now I have a new son married to my Emily... I hope I never forget how much God loves me for giving me this life.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL THE MEN IN YOUR LIVES.

Everyday I beat my own previous record for number of consecutive days I've stayed alive.
-unknown
It is hot..I mean stinkin hot, it is so hot I can't even tell you how hot it is. Why do I live in the South? I hate summer. Why...it is so hot. Humid, stinkin humid. I plant flowers and spend half the summer watering the little suckers cuz it is so stinkin hot. When I go to the nursery the plants try to look as sick as possible because they don't want me to put them in the wagon and take them home...Why? It means certain death!!! Because its so hot I will loose interest in the little guys and refuse to go out in the stinkin hot weather to water them... and they...die...All because it is stinkin hot. The biggest problem is that it is only June 18th. it will be stinkin hot until we have to go get the dang THANKSGIVING turkey. AHH fall I can't wait!

On a lighter note. This months book which has been chosen by Mary Carol for our book club to read "Olive Kitteridge" I'm looking forward to reading it after I finish my current book "A Single Thread" which I am enjoying a lot!!! It is set in New England which I'm sure is not stinkin hot right now...ooops there I go again.

I'm going to go sew something...that reminds me. I'm a quilter. Living in the stinkin hot south. What is wrong with that picture?? Maybe I need to seek some professional advice about this. Should I worry about myself?

And we find at the end of a perfect day, the soul of a friend we've made.
-Carrie Jacobs Bond

Pat and Melissa went on another MOST EXCELLENT ADVENTURE. We took Suzanne with us on this trip and she had a ball. The mission as stated in prior blogs was to hear Carrie Nelson (aka Miss Rosies Quilt Co.) at the Etowah Valley Quilt guild. We have been planning this trip for a couple of months ever since our second "MOST EXCELLENT ADVENTURE" so off we went. We knew Suzanne would have fun and enjoy the trip.

Melissa wanted to take us to this "highly recommended" restaurant. Appalachian grill. Boy was it goood goood goood. Next time you are in Cartersville Georgia be sure to stop by there! As you can see by these food photos we enjoyed our selves. Melissa and Suzanne ordered desert (Suz Kentucky Derby Pie, Melis Creme Brule') I ordered an extra spoon and tasted theirs. teehee. You should have seen the look on everyones faces including the waitress when I ordered the spoon.

Carrie was FANTASTIC. She was warm and engaging, funny and informative. She said so many things about the design process that I think about so often. She really spoke to my heart. I loved her quilts (of course) and I enjoyed hearing the stories of how she names her quilts. Each one seemed to come from a story or person that was special to her. I also loved the way she labels her quilts. She uses orphan blocks and sews a label into the backings. Most of the ones I saw were a strip sort of down the center of the backing. Then the labels are sewn into the backing and cannot be removed. I've seen this done but mostly in corners. I like the center placement of the labels the best. OK so you would think I would have more pictures of her quilts. Honestly I was so engaged by her talk that I would forget to take a photo. We were also sitting in a not so great location for taking pictures of the quilts. I promise I'll take better photos next time.

During the lecture Carrie mentioned a quilt called "Cracked Pots." I said to Melissa "She named that one after me..Melissa said I was a Crack Pot......I think there is a difference between a Cracked Pot and a Crack Pot. Should I be offended? I'm going to have to think about this one.

Melinda was there with Maetha from Tiny Stitches and we sat together. I love Melinda's blog so jump over there and check out her photos and stuff of our evening. She probably got better photos of the quilts. I am speaking at her guild soon, I can't wait to meet all those ladies.

Carrie said last night she had the best job, hanging out with quilters and making quilts. Now, how many times have I said that on my blog???...I'm so blessed..I agreed with you Carrie...Being a full time quilter is a great job.

Mary Ellen from Little Quilts brought the class she was teaching on a field trip up to Cartersville. Now isn't she the nicest teacher! Here is a photo of the class coming out of the lecture. This makes me wonder....should I be taking my Silver Thimble Club on a field trip??...well DANG. I'll have to rent two Greyhound buses there are so many of them! I could be in real trouble with this project in mind.

I forgot to mention above that I first met Carrie at market and I chose my beginning quote today just for her. And the author's name is Carrie as well..... Waving to you Carrie!!! I know Rosie will be glad to see you home again!

If you laugh really hard it is the same as a good cardio work out!
-quote from Pat B. at Silver Thimble Club 6/13/09

Well, if the above quote is true I have run 3 marathons this weekend. If the rest of the civilian world things that quilting is a boring, solitary, quiet, only introspective activity....THEY NEED TO DROP BY our Silver Thimble meetings! and OH my the Stitch In is just around the corner!!! We talked we screamed with laughter we ate...my face hurts from so much smiling.

Just to prove that I am the ever present FASHIONISTA, I wanted to show you how I dressed for our weekend. You are going to want to take note on this so pay attention. When you are the leader of a very large group of women you would want to be prepared at all times. So...I wear my beautiful sterling Silver Thimble on a lovely chain. (get it?? Silver Thimble...) But, I need to be prepared for any and all situations so this is also what I wore at our meeting. Is is a medic alert button? You know the "Help I've fallen and I can't get up" thingy? Nope, I'm not that old PEOPLE. It is actually my garage door opener. Yes, I walked around all day with my garage door opener in DAH cleavage. Why? you ask. Well if I could answer that it would be a clue to my permanent state of ridiculous antics. Its just me....I told every one that if I push the button my skirt would fly up. The DH and DD dropped by the club and just shook their heads. I guess they are used to it by now! I mentioned in another post that I'm concerned that I may get turned in to Stacy and Clinton on "What Not to Wear" This is more evidence. YIKESS...

There were so many wonderful quilts being shown. Here are a few of them. Dang I missed a quilt that Sarah was working on while it was on the design wall which was her version of the quilt we had kitted up. (I was probably running my mouth and not getting my camera). Photo 1: Julie B's killer quilt for her daughter and SIL, and they chose the fabbies pretty good huh! Photo #2: Autumn Ridge quilt that we kitted up a LONG TIME AGO. This is Karins quilt. This quilt is what I call MY QUILT at home...goes with me every where. I sit under it very day and take it with me to the hospital if I'm having surgery (I've had plenty of that in the last 5 years...I'm done). I love, this quilt! Photo #3: An adorable 30's quilt that Vicky L did. I believe this is a Schnibble pattern by Miss Rosies Quilt Co. Incidentally I will be going on another MELISSA AND PATS FABULOUS ADVENTURE tomorrow to hear Carrie Nelson (Miss Rosie) speak in Cartersville. More later on that for sure.

I will be working in the studio all day and I'm late! I worked late last night on a magazine submission which is due today. So I'm dragin' this morning. The coffee is kicking in so I really must go make haste...The design studio of Silver Thimble Quilt Co is in full gear today! HMMM I'm thinkin it is a Crock Pot....day. The person who invented the Crock Pot was a quilter I'm SURE.... More sewing time!!!!

I am mailing Barb her winnings from my 111 post give a way. Congrats again Barb! Off to American Samoa the package is on its way.

Even with treasures of jewels and gold, the best is a sweetheart with whom you've grown old.
-Author Unknown

Ok, so the above quote is soooo very true after being married for 37 years...TODAY... However I take exception to the OLD part. NOPE not old, no way, nope, nope, nope. I married my best friend 37 years ago and he is still my best friend. I would rather spend time with him than anyone else on the planet. Together we have raised two daughters and we are enjoying watching them grow and take their places in the world. My favorite song in the world is Louis Armstrongs rendition of "Wonderful World" and it is...a wonderful world in every way!!!!

That being said, I went straight to my sewing room this morning and made these little cuties. It was so much fun. This is a small project we will be offering to the participants in The Summer Stitch In, July 6-11. They can choose to make these stockings if they wish!!! They are made from a box of sweet rolls (moda of course!) One sweet roll makes 3 stockings that are about 12 inches long...That is 6 per box. WOW. I played with the cuff part, the one with the ruffle is the one they suggested in the pattern but you know me I gotta mess around a bit with the instructions. I think for the next set of 3 I will play with buttons and ric rac more....FUN (by now you are thinking that I am easily entertained). Perfect for Christmas giving. You could put some candy, or gift card...or money in them..if you put CASH they should be sent directly to me!!! Even better fill them with some quilting goodies for your quilting buddies. I'M GOING TO MAKE A ZILLION OF THESE THINGS. I'm going to show them to the girls at our Silver Thimble Club meetings this weekend so don't tell them you saw them on my blog!!!

TOMORROW night is give a way night...oh boy the fun never stops!

Gotta go...OUT TO DINNER TONIGHT.. KISSY, KISSY ,SMOOCHY, SMOOCHY.

The only real risk is the risk of thinking too small.
-Frances Moore Lappe
Big day today...Sophie is 11 years old today. She looks forward to her birthday every year. Off to Dairy Queen. She gets to order a vanilla ice cream cup. I swear she knows the second we get in the car where she is going. She is a GIFTED doggie albeit not so well behaved. Happy birthday Osama Bin Doggie (I've already explained that she is a silver schnauzer that looks like...you know who and behaves like a terrorist as well.!!!)

Here is a photo of my new favorite thing. Get in the car and go to Wal Mart and pick you up one of these goodies. It is only $16.95 and will hold every sewing notion under the sun. This is my traveling notion case. I teach so many classes and need my goodies with me.. I just love this thing and it is cute too. It comes in pink and brown and black with white polka dots..I got the black because I'm on the go so much I thought it might stay cleaner. The little monogram tag I added so i would know who I am. I love it. It makes me smile. I'll let you know if I still love it after I hit the brakes in the car and everything goes flying.. Now that sounds like something I would definitely do.

My book club met Sunday night and we discussed this months book. "The People of the Book" by Geradine Brooks. We liked the book and enjoyed our time together (wine is involved) . This group has been together around 5 years. We all raised our families together and we have enjoyed knowing each other for over 20 years. Sometimes we talk and laugh so much we barely discuss the book we have chosen. Only one of the group other than me is quilter..I'm trying to get them all on board but...well... lets say they are still CIVILIANS. Our book next month is "Olive Kitteridge" by Elizabeth Strout. Can't wait. What is on your reading list???

Tomorrow is Quilt Boy and Pat's 37th anniversary...WOW....Maybe I should have a give a way to celebrate that...hmmmm. I don't think I have a box big enough to ship him out...JUST KIDDING HE IS THE BEST!!!

The table is a meeting place, a gathering ground, the source of sustenance and nourishment, festivity, safety, and satisfaction. -Laurie Colwin

Mary Beth's boyfriend is coming over tonight so I'm FIREIN up the grill. I love to feed a hungry young man so tonight it is Pork, fingerling potatoes, marinated and grilled squash, zucchini and onions and homemade rolls...with the mandatory sweet tea (we drink gallons of that stuff all the time.)

It has been a busy weekend, we went to a graduation party for Becky's son on Saturday night. Becky's husband can DANG COOOK... He has something like 6 grills. So if you ever get invited to go over there and eat.....DON'T MISS IT. It was so much fun, meeting all of their family and enjoying their porch, and did I mention the food?

Well I had intended to post this give-a-way yesterday but I was on the run all day teaching a beginning applique' class at Patchwork Cottage and then zooming home getting dinner and then it was off to book club. So here I am. Today is posting 111...triple 1's so my give-a-way will include the following. I hope you like it!

A DVD of the movie The Way We Were. Oh how I love this movie.. MEMORIES DAH DAH DE DAH DAH DAH...OF THE WAY WE WERE. Ok I'll stop singing now. But seriously this movie is one of my all time favs. I wanted to give you something romantic and gooshy to sew by.

Another spool of Aurifil thread (and no I did not run over it) This one is kinda royal/navy. Something you might not ordinarily buy but would like to add to your collection.

And then there is a charm pack of Praire Paisley. And if you read my blog you know how I love that Minick and Simpson.

Post me a message and I'll throw your number in the random number generator and maybe you will win. Yes, I will ship out of the US, but if you send me a plane ticket I'll bring it to you IN PERSON...

I will draw a winner on Thursday night at 7 EST. OK...GO!!!!!!!!!!

Happiness is a habit - cultivate it.
-Elbert Hubbard
I've been in a rush today with Silver Thimble activities and running a few errands. You know weekend food shopping, can't stand to shop on the weekends...I try to stay away and let people who HAVE to shop on the weekends have the place.

That being said I am posting a SHOCKING discovery. Someone said to me "Why haven't you shown your new designs from market on your blog. YIKEES!!! Well slap me and call me stupid. DANG. You know how all that junk has to remain secret prior to market but it sure doesn't now. So here they are. Tic Tacs. Jelly roll friendly that is for sure and super fast to make. I'm going to make this one out of a different line of fabrics, currently it is made from 30's but I want to make it with some warm colors with high contrast.. hmmmm. I love the quilt so much and can see it in many different color ways.

The next quilt is My Sunny Garden. Oh WOW is this one fun. Loads of WOW factor and easy too. Can't wait to put it on the table with some pumkins...Did I mention I hate hot weather?

Then there is Scrappy Nines. Mine is done with reds and shirtings (as my friend Wendy said...this quilt is soooo Pat) But look what Debbie is making. She is making the quilt from Black and Taupe fabbies ZOOWIEEE is this quilt going to make you wanna SLAP YO MAMMA!
UH HUH yes sireee. I love it. Hurry up Deb we want to see the finished product. Here is a photo of her pile of cut fabbies all ready for the CHAIN GANG. She is using a ton of fabrics, more than the pattern calls for so she will have a super scrappy quilt. Don't tell her but I'm going to sneak over and steal the thing when she is finished. yes I am!!!!

I may be overloading this post with photos so I will post again with my GIVE A WAY... Tomorrow is post number 111 so I'm gathering and photographing today. YIPEEE. Dancing a way.

Later my friends,

Thursday, June 4, 2009

Shut the door, not that it lets in the cold but that it lets out the coziness.
-Mark Twain

I was invited to join Brenda and Becky for a sewing retreat in the North Georgia Mountains at Brenda's "Cabin". Well you don't have to twist my arm to turn down any opportunity to spend time with these two lovely friends...and sewing is involved....I'M THERE!!! We packed up our sewing, food, comfy clothes, beverages...hmmm, and hit the road.

I'm thinking on the way up...cabin. Is it air conditioned? (this is Georgia, summertime, humid, and I'm at THAT stage of life get my drift?) Is there in door plumbing (well of course there is lets not spend anymore time thinking about that, silly me). How many people will be in my bed? (not problem I'm packin nite nite meds..gotta love Tylenol PM, remember THAT STAGE OF LIFE COMMENT ABOVE). No T.V. absolutely NO PROB for me. Ok I'm ready. Food, who cares...(well I'll pack some Cheez Its just in case.)

WELL my friends. Cabin? I think not. It was a palace. It was a mountain HOME. We were WAY OUT IN THE BOOGER woods (my expression for deep in the woods) for sure. A piece of heaven. So beautiful, so quiet, when I turned my light out in my very own "princess" bedroom it was DARK. The best sleep, kinda like being a bear in a cave only the sheets are better.

We ate, we laughed, we told stories, we talked school, Brenda and Becky are both elementary Media Specialists and I'm a former kindergarten and first grade teacher. By the way Media specialist is fancy for LIBRARIAN. We sewed our brains out and talked non stop. I didn't want to leave. Did I mention my princess bedroom and comfy sheets?

I took a picture of each one of us at our sewing stations. Guess which one is me?

Brenda fed the deer corn every afternoon and those deer showed up at dusk just like clock work. She is such a good mom! However, if I were a deer I would be a little bit careful as one of their ancestors is mounted inside the "Cabin". hmmmm. Brenda and Joe have the cabin decorated all mountain style and cozy. Who knew there were Bear tooth brush holders and Bear clocks and Moose candle holders??? Apparently I need to get out into the wilderness more.

I worked on a ME project not a Silver Thimble project, well... I did use one of my designs but the quilt is for the foot of my bed. About two years ago I started a king size "Strawberry Pie" from the Moda line CHOCOLAT. The colors are the same as the colors in the rug of my bedroom so I wanted a quilt I could fold at the foot of my bed. I decided it this was the purrrfect time for me to finish this monster of a quilt. I just love those GIANORMUS QUILTS. I swear I hate the word king size. My memory of the quilt from two years ago is that I had all 168 of the blocks made. WOOPIE I was ready to go. NOPE!!!! got to the cabin, oops palace. I had to make 49 more 16 patch units. DANG. Oh well. I ended up getting the quilt finished in 3 sections so all I have to do is sew two large seams, make the backing and binding and it is complete. This quilt is stunning (if i do say so myself!). I rarely, (HECK almost never) make a quilt from one line of fabric. I like to scrap it up and mix it up more, kinda fits my personality better. However, this quilt makes my skirt FLY UP!

Did I mention I was locked up with two librarians? I'm a reader but these girls must have gone to speed reading classes, anyone remember Evelyn Woods? I came home with a reading list ten miles long. So, I gotta go update my reading cue from our library. I'm falling behind. I bet those two have already read a book and I haven't even washed my travelin undies yet....hmmm. Maybe I don't need 8 hours of sleep after all, I gotta catch up.

I hope you enjoy some of the photos.

Stay tuned because I'm planning another give-a-way. I love to do this??? I'm going to do it in honor of my 111 post. teehee..
