Pick Four "My Day"

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from
your own actions.
-Dalai Lama

Today is my day on Sue Abrey's fabulous blog hop. I'm so excited dee da dee I just can't hide it doo dah doo I'm about to loooose control and I think I like it! dee dah doo dah dah. OK, that is enough singing lets talk Blog Hop and Sue's new book!  I love that she is giving everyone a little bit of information about the places that each of the featured bloggers live! Can't wait to see what she says about the Atlanta area...but here is my side bar comment. Sue is from England (very British!) I am Southern ya'll (insert Paula Dean accent). Can you imagine what a conversation between the two of us would sound like??? I laugh just thinkin about it..Holey Smokes!
Isn't the cover lovely? Eye candy. Love it!

So now comes my little bookie reviewie...be patient there will be prizes at the end!

When I look a new book I look at it with several different things in mind. I wear lots of  "hats" so I like to find books that meet several different purposes in my quilting life.

The first "hat" is finding a book that would work for the quilters in my Silver Thimble Quilt Club. There are about 70 members that meet monthly, many have been members for 8 years! I work with shops in the Atlanta area to kit projects for the membership. We do a quilt kit per month. (Kits are optional so don't pass out every member does not do a new quilt each month.) This book fits the bill for my club members because it has multiple projects I think they will like. The value of the book for  is raised if I can get at least two projects from the book. The projects I can sooo picture my group liking are Starstruck, Diamonds for Christmas,Stars at the Crossroads, Poppy Twist  and Antique Nine Patches..yes sir, these projects will make awesome kits. We can use this book for many months. perfecto!

Then there is the "teaching hat".  I love to teach. Most dear to my heart are those beginning quilters. (I love a baby quilters, especially if they are 95 years old!) This book will not only guide a beginner through the process of choosing fabrics but will also provide some projects they can feel successful with right off the bat. Double Blue Patches and Stepping Stones are perfect for the beginning quilter. Way to go Sue!

Then there is another part to the teaching hat. I talk to quilters  ALL THE TIME about fabric selection. From beginners to experienced quilters fabric selection seems to be the most terrifying part of quilting. Sue's book makes fabric selection so easy.  The section she wrote called "  Choosing Fabrics"  is terrific. BE NOT AFRAID, Sue makes the process painless.

The visual appeal of the projects in a book is important to me especially if I am recommending it to a group of quilters. Sue has put together a great collection of quilts with a variety of color palettes that are yummy. I especially like that she added "  Color Alternatives". NICE! groovy baby.
Last but not least is the hat that I wear " for me". I don't get a lot of sewing time just for me so I pick and choose very carefully the projects would I like to spend time making for my home or for gift giving. Again, Sue rang the bell and I came a runnin! I love "Drew's Windmills, Poppy Twist" and I must make "  Diamonds for Christmas". Yes sir, I would love to make each one and I will. Sue can you put a few more hours in my day???

I hope you have enjoyed my little take on Sue's wonderful book. I'm so happy for her and wish her great success with "Pick Four." Thank you Sue for including me in your Blog Hop..I'm honored!

Dah prizes. Sue will be giving away an autographed copy of her book drawn from the comments left on this very blog post! Hey hey hey.
I will be giving away another copy of Pick Four  along with a
"  Pat's Pasta Roll"   40: 2 1/2" strips of fabrics similar to the above photo... selected by moi from my very own stash  (got fabric? oh yeah). I would love to get to know you so tell me about your current project or just tell me something I don't know about you, I can keep a secret! I can't wait to see who wins and will draw for my winner on Wednesday August 31st. Good luck to all!

Tomorrow, hop on over to Kim's blog she is terrific and has written two fabulous books herself!  I'm sure she will have a lot to share with us.

I love the Southern accent in your posts LOL! Like Sue, I'm English, but we all talk quilting so I'm sure we'd understand each other. I'm currently working on a half log cabin design in a Moda range called Glace (jelly roll). It's made a lovely winter/christmas quilt, which I'm busy quilting. I should have it finished in time for the cold weather.

Like Sue I am also from the UK, but I am Welsh! I love your accent...!!! Quilting sounds so good in a southern drawl... I am a longarm quilter and rarely get the time to make my own stuff, so it would be a real treat to win this book....please,please,please!

Thanks for the book review!! I hope I can win a copy for myself too! Thanks for a chance :)

Sue's book is wonderful. I am collecting fabrics for Stepping Stones. Almost there!

Finding Sue online was a blessing. She has helped me so much as I have been learning to quilt.

My current project is a queen for my bed using Grace by Three Sisters for Moda and the Lucky Stars pattern by Atkinson Designs. I'm slow but one day this will adorn my bed!

Love to see picts from the book and a review too. It is difficult for me to buy a book unless I have seen it.

I'm currently working, along with my quilting partner, on pattern-writing for a BOM sampler quilt we are doing for our LQS in which the entire quilt is cut with the GO cutter. We are also, at home, preparing for the hurricane and not knowing whether we should stay here or try to get out of the area....which isn't easy as there aren't many hotels a reasonable distance from here that have vacancies right now. :(

Great post...as always...

That looks like a great book! Thanks for the chance to win it, as well as the pasta roll! I need more neutrals! I'm working on lots of things right now...a hot air balloon quilt, my biridie stitches quilt, and Leanne Beasley,s butterfly garden quilt just to name a few. I tend to have lots of things going on at once! LOL

That Southern accent just makes me feel right at home and loved. Oh, could be that I am a deep south boy myself. But then YOU know that already.

Right now I am playing with fusible applique and woven backgrounds. I confess that applique scares me. So, to conquer that fear, I am diving right in. I even plan to do some edge turned applique. (really scary!!!! to me anyway.)

A secret? I grew up sleeping under a Sunbonnet Sue hand appliqued quilt. Probably not the perfect choice for a little boy, but it sure was made with a lot of love. It was made by my grandmother.

This book is right up my alley. I would love to have a copy - I think it will be great for teaching beginning quilters.

I am currently working on learning to quilt on my Crown jewel and hope to get a bunch of UFO quilt tops done. So, winning this book would be just the right timing to start a new project.

One current project is a dresden quilt all made from clothes that a mom made for her little girl. The mother passed away when the girl was young. The little girl is now my age and a friend and she has saved those dresses all these years.

I be from that there Mid west and sometimes my hillbilly self jus up 'n' takes over. Course even tho I have a pure ol hillbilly heart I be downright sure to speak good grammar like n such.

Oh, I am so glad you asked me that! I am currently working on a quilt I am designing using bow ties. I saw an antique one that I fell in love with so I am trying to replicate that with my own touches added in. Wish me luck on it...it looks great in my head, hope it looks as great in reality!! lol

I am also from the UK originally and I speak with a Yorkshire accent! I now live in France. Love this book will be entering all week to see if I can win one. I am just finished a Christmas Sampler wall hanging, it just needs the binding putting on. Thanks for the chance.

Awesome review!!! I can hear that conversation with you and Sue. Let me add a little "cajun" to the mix:) Yesterday, I sewed a valence for my sewing room. This weekend, I'm determined to take care of some of the remaining projects down there. On the sewing front, I'm reverse sewing a project. I didn't like how the blocks looked on my design wall. Hope to see you sometimes soon!

Hi from France

Sorry but I am not a 95 years old quilter, (49 ,its good too, isn't it), and I am not a beginner except for machine quilting (I sew quite all with my hands...thank you my hands...LOL). I discover your blog and I am sure it will be in my google reader list very soon.

Thank you for this giveaway . Have a nice quilting day .

Thank you again - oh southern accents and sweet tea...what a life -jealous! Well - I love this new book from what I've heard fabric selection is ALWAYS a chore - and I love the showing of varied colorways - I have a hard times visuallizing a project quilt in other colors.... Now about my current projects - we'll I've just finished a top of scrappy 12-patches with pinwheels. Now to get my backing and get 'er done. Then I'd LOVE to make a Bonnie Hunter quilt - and this your jelly roll of neutrals woudl be the prefect grouping to get that going too..... Thanks for a chance to win.

I am currently working on several different projects. I'm finishing the binding on a quilt for my son, need to do the quilting part and the binding for a Christmas quilt, need to finish the borders and then everything else on a pink/brown quilt, and I'm working on the block of the month quilt from Patchwork Cottage that YOU designed. : )

This book sounds great. One of the reasons I enjoy reading Sue's blog is because she has such a great sense of humor! I am working on an Asian fabric purse right now. I'm to the quilting the fabric step and I'm not so good at that part. We've had lots of company so I haven't been in my sewing room for a few days.

I am amazed how many times I find 4 fabrics I love together and they sit on my shelf because I can't find a 4 color quilt. This book is knocking at my door.

I have a south Texas accent (different from a northern Texas accent or a West Texas accent or even an east Texas accent - I kid you not!) but I lived in Athens, GA for 18 years! Once I learned that "Hey!" meant "hello" and not something to feed the horses, I fit right in!

My current project is my Brown Bag Challenge project. It's fabric I got in a brown bag at sewing retreat last year and I'm sewing it up into a quilt to reveal at sewing retreat this year. It's a poke-your-eyes-out bright Philip Jacobs floral, to which I have added a bunch of equally bright K Fassett brights. Has to be done by the end of September. PLENTY of time! Thanks for the opportunity to win what looks like a fabulous book.

My current project ... why do you assume there's only one? Ha ha! I have two going out to a machine quilter, two waiting to be sandwiched and machine quilted myself, one machine basted and ready for hand-quilting, two that I have fabric for in the planning stage, one on my machine being pieced, one being hand-pieced, one waiting for fabric to arrive in the mail to start planning, and I don't know how many in bits and boxes waiting for inspiration to strike. Maybe 8 to twelve? Whew!

So OF COURSE I need another one. Pick me for Pick Four!

I love to make quilts from scraps--even the tiniest of scraps. I have made string quilts, crumb quilts, quilt blocks pieced on foundations such as colour catchers and dryer sheets. I can't bear to throw anything out! I am currently working on a black and white quilt that features some of my fabrics pieced to colour catcher foundations. I kept piecing until I ran out of black and white fabric. Thanks to my friend in Oregon, I have some more black and white fabric to make this masterpiece just a little larger with matching pillowcases. That will be this weekend's project. Please include me in your drawing for this fabulous book.

Oh, what am I working on now--well, to begin with I am working on a Halloween Quilt from a pattern called The Big EZ--love it because you can use large graphic prints without cutting them up! Next, I am working on the Butterfly BOM--that is all fusible applique and embellishment. Am I done, oh no--I am working on a Crabapple Hill embroidery: Which Witch Boot (I think that is the name) and another embroidery with frogs--I just finished a quilt and got it back from the longarm quilter's, so it now needs a binding. Put a binding on my friends wallhanging and gave it to her two days ago--and I have to go back to work next week; Yuck! How can I put my quilting aside to work??? I also have a blog and am just loving life and quilting! I LOVE your blog posts! I think that about says it all....I probably could tell you about more WISPs, but that might scare you! I would so love to win this book--I need something new, can't you tell! Thanks for the chance!

Hello there neighbor! You sound like a delight. My current project is Sue's Christmas Quilt-a-long BOM, this past month inspired me to blow on ahead and finish off the top. I've started making a backing for it. Something pieced from the novelty prints that are hidden away in the front. It's nice that you will be able to see the small bits on the front and turn the print it came from. I'm looking forward to having it finished, not just because I'm enjoying it so much but also because it's hogging up my sewing table with all this fabric!

I loved that you said how multipurpose this book is. I adore books that I want to make more than one quilt from.

G'day (insert Aussie accent) I have just finished a Wagga (traditional Australian Quilt/bedcover) and entered it into the show (fair in USA?) as a challenge. I just have to pick and sew the borders on a quilt for my MIL's 70th and then I am up for a new project...a new book with such a lovely recommendation would help! Happy quilting Sue SA

I am loving all the quilting blogs. I am a beginner quilter. Made a few "my way" in the past but now taking classes & trying to do some better quality quilts. Starting & finishing still freak me out. Choosing fabric=horrible!! Machine quilted my first paper pieced table runner, hand stitching my first quilt. I have a wall hanging ready to sandwich but I just can't figure out how to quilt it! So I don't have any real stash & I think this book would be awesome!!

WOW, those strips look like just what I'm looking for. I journeyed to Shipshewana yesterday with my daughter (we were celebrating my late dad's birthday) and I forgot to look for the neutrals jelly rolls. Would I like to win yours? You betcha. I am just finishing quilting a Christmas wallhanging, and knitting a neck warmer, and canning tomatoes and getting ready to knit a pair of socks! The new quilt is for my husband for Christmas. I'd love the book too. It sounds more interesting with each passing day.

I started quilting about 18 months ago and due to a hearing problem found classes didn't help, so have been teaching myself. I have just finished piecing Carrie Nelson's Double Duty for my son's 21st birthday next month and now practicing FMQ to start quilting it. From what I have been reading this book sounds wonderful for us new quilters. Thank you for the chance to win a copy.

My current project, you say? How about projects- I can't ever seem to finish one before I start another. Right now I'm finishing the borders on a Halloween quilt, starting a funky purple and periwinkle lap quilt for my daughter, searching for the perfect binding fabric for my just quilted bed quilt, etc, etc. The book looks like a good one. Thanks for the chance to win!! Hope you're enjoying a sweet tea this evening, but my guess is that you're sewing up a storm ( maybe a bit of back stitching?)

Hey, there. Have you been to GrannyTaught Us How? It's my favorite place in Atlanta, next to Fado. :) Anyway, here's the scoop on my projects: I'm making two blue-and-white quilts, one a wedding quilt from Kate Conklin's "There's a Square in There" pattern, and one of my own design; I'm calling it Yankee Pinstripes. So I really should be quilting instead of perusing quilt blogs. But it's late, and I can't resist.

Thanks for the giveaway.

Loved your review of the book and would love to win it to add to my library. Thanks for the chance!!

Great review of the book! I have three projects in the works: an appliqué project (going slow!), my first jelly roll attempt (very fun), and a red and green quilt that will be a Christmas gift if I ever get it done (been working on this since February). I guess I fall into the category of "sew many quilts and sew little time"!

Carol said...

I always have several projects going at any time. About to begin sewing the rows together for a Many Moons top using the quarter circle template and my collection of homespuns. The curved piecing was fun. Also embroidering long panels that will go in a Crabapple Hill pattern, don't remember the name--Seaside Rose, maybe? Knitting my second pair of socks, have a quilt I am hand quilting, a tumbler quilt in homespuns waiting for my machine quilter to get back from a trip. Also maybe 3 or 4 tops waiting for me to machine quilt when I get up the courage. And other UFO's in various stages of incompletion!

Vesuviusmama said...

My current project is hand quilting a quilt called Pick and Choose for a woman who bought it from me at my first ever booth appearance at a community fair. I was so flattered, but right now, I'm not feeling much like hand quilting, yet I have to get it done. These are the times I wish I knew how to machine quilt!

Thanks for the review, it is nice to hear how everyone think about the book! I love the different hats approach. I am currently working on a quilt for my son using some fabric that I tracked all over the internet for months because it is out of print. Then I finally found some right here in my little town at a store where the owner makes his own designer clothes for his shop! He was using this fabric for PJ's for his kids! Yikes!!!! Any way he was gracious enough to sell it to me and now I am searching for just the right pattern to showcase the fish print my little guy loves!

Hi Pat! I've just been reading all though the comments, and WHAT an industrious group we all! I love the sound of all those projects on the go!

For me, I'm still finishing off Stepping Stones from Sue's book (obv. don't include me in the book draw - but I would very much like to win your pasta roll - and maybe I can keep it to use on one of your Neutrals projects when your book comes out?); and I have Cathi and Sue's Scatty Christmas stars QAL on the go too.

I'm from the middle of the UK and have a Birmingham accent (which I'm afraid regulary loses out in popularity to the lilt of the Welsh to the west of the UK, or to the soft warmth of a those in the SW of the UK... ) but SewAli is quite right in the very first reply - we all talk 'quilt'!

I am new to quilting. I love Civil War fabrics and my current project is a double nine patch from the Start Quilting Book by Alex Anderson with Jo Morton fabric.

I have been following blogs such as Quilt Hollow for quilting and just have discovered Sue's blog.

Hi Pat! Nice to meet you. I'm late to this party as I was on vacation (Outer Banks-the week before the hurricane, thank goodness!) and then you know how it is-you come home and it takes a week to recover and get back in the groove and dang, you need another vacation! :)
I'm currently working on bindings (not my fave part of the process as any of my blog followers could attest!) I'm quilting a BIG quilt for a friend right now on my HQ16 and trying not to start a new project since my sewing room (aka the basement) is being finished in phases and all my stuff is everywhere is shouldn't be...sigh. I'm looking forward (starting to get a little desparate, but trying to hang on)to piecing again in a organized space-just like I used to have before we decided to make it better!!(?)
