Martingale Week #5

"...because I knew you, I have been changed for good."
"  For Good "   -  from the Musical Wicked
(long post with  Pat's Primer lesson)
I have just had the best weekend! Seeing Wicked with my girls, watching a movie with Sir Quilt Dude and the girls, everyone snuggled, each under one of  my quilts. Sunday morning breakfast together and then up to the sewing room to make some projects for Emily's new home and Mary Beth's new apartment, and a side order of cookie baking thrown in. What can be better than that? Now it is Martingale Monday, so lets get our quilt on!

The name of this quilt is "Goin My Way?" It is very simple and is one of those quilts that can easily be made larger. Need it wider..add another vertical strip. Need it longer just continue the braided strips a little longer. The strips are trimmed down vertically after they are sewn so you end up with precise lengths super easy. I put a light neutral outside the braided sections so the body of the quilt would "float" in the center. See I do quilts with borders! Were you worried I would never send you a quilt with borders? Detailed instructions are in the book (well duh!)

On to the prizes.

This book is another compilation of fabulous quilts from several different designers. Now that I have this book in my hand there are several different quilts I would love to choose for my "Thimbles Club". Yes sirreee this is another goodie!not a great photo..sorry
Then of course you will get a copy of MY BOOK all signed and smoochy kisses from me in it.
Your Bonus prize from me this week is the CD of the musical Wicked....dee dah dee dah dooooo... YUP lovely music to sew by!

Now it is on to the promised thoughts on BINDING. Here we go class lets all sit in our places with bright shinning faces. (oh heavens can you tell I taught Kindergarten and First Grade for 23 years?) If you are an expert on binding you are dismissed to go and sew now.

I have always taught with a basic way of thinking. Don't tell people (adults or children) how to do something without giving them a reason why you like a particular technique.  I would also suggest learning lots of different techniques and listening to lots of different teachers.. then pick the way that suits you and your sewing style best. (be a life long learner so to speak).

Binding. I prefer Bias binding in almost every situation. Here is why.

#1: Bias binding is more supple. Bias softens and drapes sooo well.

#2: Bias Binding is more durable. Over time it will out live straight of grain binding. Because of the angle of the threads running down and around edges of the quilt it will be durable. I admit that we could say that we will be dead by the time our binding wears out so why should we bother... lets be nice to our descendants. ok? It is the right thing to do.

#3: Bias binding cooperates so nicely when stitched onto the quilt by machine and looks so lovely when hand stitched to the back.

#4: What in the heck is cuter than plaids and stripes on the binding. NOTHING! don't argue with me here I'm just sayin!

#5: Hand sewing binding down is relaxing and a good excuse to drink a cup of tea, or coke zero, or eat some cookies (or cheetos with your cheeto picker!)

Lets talk about cutting fabric on the bias. First of all...I just can't deal with the tube method of cutting binding. I end up flopping myself on the floor and throwing a hissy fit.  My friend Betty showed me how to fold fabric super easy to create bias strips. In my book there is a detailed description with handy dandy diagrams. I will show you some photos of what I'm talking about below. Also, Gene made a Utube video of this technique so pop on over and watch him in person..or check out his blog post on this topic the video is on the blog post as well. He did a great job, thanks Gene! I will not be making  a Utube because I would have to put on makeup, get my teeth whitened, see a plastic surgeon, have a pedicure and get my hair cut only to look moderately presentable..you are going to have to deal with my camera.

Cutting Step #1
Lay your fabric out. Right side up or wrong side up it does not matter. The selvage is at the top and bottom of the photo. Fabric is running lengthwise from left to right. This can be done with a full width of fabric or less!

#2 First Fold
Fold the top left corner down to the bottom edge of the selvage. You have now established the bias of the fabric, which is the diagonal fold! Elapsed time 3 seconds

#3 Second Fold
Fold the bottom left edge (corner) up to the top right edge, folding the second fold onto the first fold. Remember this.."Always fold the bias edge ONTO  ITSELF" You now have two folds stacked onto  each other. Elapsed time 2.5 seconds

#4 Another fold
If you are working with a full width of fabric you will need to fold again with the bottom left edge folded up to the top right edge or "folded onto itself ." The folded fabric will be laying at an angle just like the above photo. Notice the feet in the photo..you won't have toes like that lookin at you!what a professional photo!  Elapsed time 1.5 seconds

 #5  Turn and Slice
Gently turn your fabric and slice through all the layers cutting your binding strips. You will want to make the first slice by cutting the folded edges away. I call this  " Givin the fabric a little haircut". Once you cut the folds away, cut the binding into your desired widths. I like 2" - 2 1/4" you may want to start with 2 1/2" and then work your way to using 2 1/4" widths, and so on! Elapsed time 7 seconds.

Total folding and cutting time: 14ish seconds. I really is fast once you get  the hang of it. If you have to find this little tutorial and read it 99 times and practice it may take 7-14 hours. The bottom line here is that it does NOT TAKE any longer to make bias binding strips than it takes to cut straight of grain strips.

Sew your strips together, end to end. The ends are already cut at a 45 degree angle so it is a snap! don't roll your eyes at me!

Here is the formula for figuring out how much fabric to buy if making bias binding.
Length of quilt x 2 + Width of quilt x 2 divided by WOF multiplied by width of binding. Then add about 10 inches..or so...this covers your corners and beginning and ending processes the number is generous!

Next time I'll show you some sewing ideas for your binding to the quilt. Right now you have readers fatigue I'm sure!

Post a comment and tell me if you like live theater and what you have seen and loved. Winner announced on Thursday! (I pinky swear I will make shorter blog posts). I would also love to hear what you think of the Show Me How to Make Bias strips tutorial.

Thanks for the binding tutorial. The quilt you showed is the one that first caught my eye when I saw your book.

I love the "occasion" of going to the live theatre, and have seen all sorts of things from Shakespeare, to ballet, to opera to musicals.

I'm tempted not to post this till later today, cos no. 1 never wins.

Hi, Pat, I showed your trunk show quilts at Little Quilts on my blog; congrats on your book!! Long ago, I went to see Tintypes in Chicago, which was presented in the round; it was so wonderful I went to see it several times.

Thanks so much for the link to You Tube. I've looked at the pictures and tried playing but just wasn't getting it till the video. I took my daughter to NYC to Wicked for her 30th birthday (how did she grow up so fast????) and then we saw it again at Kennedy Center in DC (took my hubby with us to that one!). LOVED it both times, and would you belive it, Dee Roscioli was Elphaba in both!! She is fantastic.

I saw Cats in Des Moines, Iowa. It was wonderful.

Thanks for the binding tutorial. I will be needing it soon. Happy quilting.

Emily and I went to see a local production of The Nutcracker last year and we enjoyed it. Still hoping I'll get lucky and win your book! Thanks for the chance! :0)

I love live theater. Probably my all time favorite (so far) that I have seen is Les Miserables. It was amazing.
But I also loved The Lion King.

Wicked is on the list of shows I want to see. I didn't know it was in Atlanta until too late to plan and get tickets.

I've never seen live theater.. I couldn't drag DH with me there if my life depended upon it, and I always had children in tow before that. I didn't think it was fair to others, or affordable to us to take all of our children to the theater, so we just never went. Sad, I bet it is wonderful!

I think binding is possibly one of my favorite parts of quilting and for all the reasons you mentioned! (great minds think alike!)
The last time I saw a theatre show was YEARS ago when we went to London and saw the Lion King. Other than...it would have to be watching my own son on stage for a play here in town.

I am truly spoiled...I have seen many Broadway plays, the last one was In the Heights, and I loved it! I have seen
Wicked twice, and it may be my fav...for now.

Thanks for the chance to win! I love the music in

Keep those long blog posts coming!

I love live theater, and that's the main reason I started volunteering at the Fox. My all-time favorite is "Phantom of the Opera". Thanks for the binding tutorial. For once, I think I finally get it because something clicked.

I've never been to any professional theater productions, but I'd be willing to go if the opportunity arose!
I do all bias bindings, and can't believe that people think it takes more fabric, or more time.

I ADORE live theater!!! My husband and I just went to see The Screwtape Letters this past weekend, and he is getting tickets to see Wicked for my birthday. The sound track would be a "wicked" win!!!! Live theater was not available where we used to live in North Carolina, so we've had a wonderful time going to quite a few live plays since we moved to Nashville.

I'm intrigued by your method of folding fabric to get bias strips! I can't wait to try it out. Hopefully later today I can experiment making the binding for my latest project that is almost done with the quilting. Thanks for the tutorial!

I LOVE live musicals! I"ve seen a lot, you don't really want me to list them all do you?!!! But I have seen Wicked. One of my all time favorites is Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. I saw that one 3 times with Donny Osmond. I've seen that way of doing bias binding. Way different than the way I learned but I think I like it better than the continuous bias binding I was taught. And once again I love the quilt you shared from your book. I have to get that book! Pick me, pick me!

I am a tube-method girl, since I could never figure out how to fold the fabric. Now the mystery is solved and I can refer to your post anytime. Yay! As for theater, I have not been in ages, but I remember seeing The Sound of Music at the Starlight open air theater in Kansas City with my mother in the 1960s. Loved it of course! Karmen

I like live theater but don't have much time for it right now. My favorite memory was when we had season tickets to the Morris Mechanic theater years ago. I was pregnant during that season. One of the plays we saw was The Whiz, and when the orchestra started playing Ease on Down the road, my son kicked along to the beat of the music.

Seriously...this blog was posted at 4 a.m.???...Ok..On to the shows...I have seen Wicked in Birmingham, AL., at the BJCC, in Atlanta, GA., at the Fox, and in New York, NY., on Broadway...and can I say I enjoyed it ALL three times?!!.. I love the theater but don't (despite the Wicked record) get to attend that often!.. I think 'Wicked' and 'Phantom' are a tie for my favorite!
I loved your tutorial...and after folding my gas bill several times..I got the hang of it and will try it on my next binding!...Thanks!

Oh, how fabulous -- I have tried a couple of different ways of making bias binding but they always end up with that dreaded tube -- and I don't do well with it at all! I can't wait to try your method as I have a stripe fabric just waiting to be turned into the binding for a quilt! Thank you!!

I love live theatre. My favourite of all time is Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris -- have seen it three times over the years and it never fails to mesmerize me.

Oh, tes, interesting folding technique. I used to do the continuous binding with one seam method, but my heavens it had been so long since I finished anything that I haven't done it in a while.
I do like live performance. It's been a while for that too. I think the last one that wasn't a circus or STOMP was a shakespear at the festival. Used to have season tickets and it was so good!

Back stateside I've seen Mary Poppins (this year in NE) and The Sound of Music (in AR) and Blue Man Group (in NYC/London/AR)and some off-Broadway shows. I love the theater!
Thanks for the tutorial. Heading down shortly to work on some art quilts... will try out your tips with one of them when they're ready.

Thank you for the blog and the link to Gene explaining, too! He is just as cute as a button. (I'm sure you are too, but I admit it's hard to tell from your cute toenails)

I saw Wicked with my daughter and her friend and her friend's mother. It was terrific. I saw West Side Story not too long ago with a girlfriend I've known since we were 13. That was terrific too. (If you want to see a cute uTube, google Web Site Story, but I digress) I remember seeing The Sound of Music downtown in Chicago when I was really little, and Oliver when my adopted bro was about 14, and mom said he was just starting to be a little trouble, mouthy and all (she was a vet of three other sons at the time, I figure she knew of what she spoke) and that image of what could happen to an orphan shaped him right up! I don't know if that was really true, Jerry is the best brother a girl could have, and mom may have been suffering from teenage fatigue (Doesn't every family adopt their fifth child? There was a girl in there, as well. But that's a story for another day....)

Anyway, except for quilting, there just isn't anything that makes my heart sing quite so much as musical theater. And I am fortunate enough to live in Chicago, where you can find a musical to see most any time! Thanks!

Joan

Love the bias strip tutorial and can't wait to try it. Used biased strips for some tote bags and would've loved knowing this then! I've seen Wicked three times in Los Angeles and now it's in Orange County and I'm thinking of seeing it again. That and Phantom of the Opera are the only things I've seen but they were both awesome enough to see over and over.

OK, I think I need a live lesson. The pictures help, but sometimes I'm a little special....
My family and I LOVE live theatre. We like to watch it and we like to do it! Our favorite show of all time is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. My third child is named after that show and I decorated his nursery in bright multicolors for everything. My friend even made him a bright tie-dye fleece blanket with tie-dye satin binding. We called it his amazing technicolor blanket. My two older sons and husband and I have been in several community theatre productions together and in different combinations of togetherness. Live theatre rocks!

I've never done bias binding because the tube & drawing lines method looked so complicated. This tutorial makes it look soooooo easy. I actually have a quilt kit that has curved edges that I have put off making because I knew it had to have bias binding-now I can do it. I am in the process of doing my first log cabin quilt (king size-no less) and will use this method for my binding. Thanks so much for posting this & Gene's video makes it look easy.

My most favorite live performance was a play on Broadway by Harry Chapin. After the show, I pushed my way back stage and got his autograph on the playbill.

Thanks for taking the time to publish the bias instructions. I remember them from the Paradise Retreat, but it is helpful to be able to see the instructions. Long posts are a pleasure because you make them so entertaining!

Gonna have to reread that post a few times to get this process in my head. The folding is fine, I"m just a wee bit foggy on the cutting part. Maybe I'll watch Gene's tute too.
I went to live theater when I was a preteen...saw John and Patty Duke Astin, but don't remember the name of the play. My sister and her husband took me...part of learning to be cultured :)

I've already practiced folding the fabric ready to cut. Did it several times to get the technique into my fingers as well as my mind.
